Ian Lauer began training in the martial arts at the age of 12. His first training was in Coszack's Karate which is an eclectic self defense system with roots in Shorin-Ryu, Judo and Wing Chung. He excelled in classes and tournaments alike and in 1994 he became the youngest ever Coszack's practitioner at that time to earn his black belt under Grandmaster Hardwick.
After moving to Los Angeles, Mr. Lauer passed by the Bryan Hawkins Kenpo Karate school in West LA and decided it was time to expand his martial arts knowledge. Ironically as a youngster Ian attended one of Grandmaster Ed Parker's camps and that experience stuck with him. So when he met Master Hawkins whom is a direct student of GM Parker he felt as if he had come home upon entering the West Los Angeles Kenpo studio. He began diligently training and earned his Kenpo black belt in 2017.
Once the second black belt was around his waist, he began to realize just how much he has yet to learn, not only in Kenpo but in martial arts as a whole. It was at this point when Ian set his lifetime martial arts goal of earning the rank of black belt rank in 10 different martial arts systems and 10th degree in American Kenpo. With this lofty goal in mind, Ian doubled up his dedication in Kenpo. In addition to his Kenpo training, in 2018 he is started training in both TKD (Tae Kwon Do) and Hapkido with Grandmaster Jun Chong, Master Phillip Rhee and Master Armen Safaryan. He earned the rank of 1st Degree Black Belt in both TKD and Hapkido through Master Safaryan.
It was around this time that Mr. Lauer decided to add BJJ, Wrestling and Kickboxing at Dynamix MMA to his busy training schedule as he continued his Kenpo studies. Of the three, he developed a strong affinity for BJJ because of how it compliments his Kenpo training in his overall development as a Martial Artist.
At this time, Mr. Lauer teaches American Kenpo at his school in Zanesville and also teaches Coszacks Karate where it all started for him in 1990. He also is happy to be continuing his BJJ studies at Gracie Allegiance Ohio.
